Holiday Time Again

It really doesn’t seem that long ago that I was wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, but here it is a year later already.

Sheesh.

I’ve been in Northern California for a couple of days now, busy with stuff about which I’ll post later.

For the moment, I’ll just share this: I flew up on an exceptionally clear day, perfect for flying.  Departing Los Angeles there was haze over the basin, but the snow up in the Angeles National Forest was clearly visible, with the broad stretch of desert leading to Nevada behind.  We banked over Malibu Creek State Park, crossed over the perfectly-visible San Andreas Fault, then headed up over the Tehachapis and paralleled the snow covered Sierras.

I love flying, probably more so given how rarely I do it.  If the seating is unassigned, I’ll rush to get a window; if assigned is an option, I’ll pay the extra money to reserve a window seat.  And unless there are clouds below, I’ll stare out the window the whole time.

As we passed over Fresno, I could see the highways heading into the Sierras.  A little while later, I looked out the window and saw, with incredible clarity, the bright granite face of El Capitan.  Behind it I could just make out Half Dome, which is much harder to spot looking down on it from 32,000 feet than from the ground, silhouetted against a bright blue sky.

Seeing the Yosemite Valley and El Capitan from that far away was amazing, and I’ll admit that I felt pretty cool (in my geeky way) that I knew where and when to look for it on the flight.  Probably good that I was facing the window, because as it passed by, I was wearing a big, stupid grin on my face.

This picture is from a trip to Yosemite in 2008.  Not the same, as my camera was inaccessible during the flight, but I figured I’d share the wintery view nonetheless.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

  1. Awesome photo.

I love this place and I have visited there twice in my life.

    Happy Holiday.

  2. Nice picture, as usual.

When I fly, I’m usually too busy reading to look out the window. I did look out once and saw Meteor Crater in Arizona – very cool.

    Happy Holidays

  3. Ni-ice picture. Pun intended 🙂

    Merry Christmas!

  4. Merry Christmas!

  5. Sigh….
    Gorgeous.

  6. Yosemite in the winter is the best.

  7. Hope you are having a great time. (BTW that part about your camera being inaccessible sounded a little crazy.)

  8. Augh! My comment just disappeared. It’s so awkward commenting from ph. Basically I was saying how much I loved the view from the air too, how magical it all looks, and how cool that you recognized those landmarks!!

  9. Happy holiday!

  10. Sartenada – Welcome to the site! And thank you for the compliment.

Homer-Dog – Thanks. For me, unless we’re flying above clouds, my face is usually pressed to the glass

    MissMcCracken – LOL, very punny!

    Aly – Thanks! You too!

CMACC – Thanks. I’m sure the snow where you are is very pretty too.

Phil – Hmmm… I’m not sure I can rank any season in Yosemite as “best”, I like them all!

Narami – It was very nice. The camera was at the bottom of my bag, stuck under the seat, and I was too busy staring…

Spleeness – Darn comments! But thanks all the same!

Gany – To you as well!
