HIKE: Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

(Many, many pictures from this one.  Be sure to click on the Flickr link at the end!)

Located just south of the county line between Los Angeles and Orange Counties, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is an example of the kinds of wetlands that used to be all up and down the West Coast.  Largely destroyed by development (only about 9% of natural wetlands remain in California), Bolsa Chica is an example of what was and a key to keeping what remains.

About five miles of trails loop through the Reserve, all relatively flat.  The path I’ve described below covers most of the distance, but you can shorten it and change the route to suit your needs.  A map of the trail system can be picked up at the interpretive center (see directions below).

Be sure to bring a camera, as the whole area teems with life.

Stepping Aside

I’ll admit it, trail running just has no appeal for me.

Everything I enjoy about hiking, the sights, smells, taking photographs, wildlife, drinking in the views, all of it, would be missed if I were trail running.  Heck, most trail runners spend their time, at least from what I can tell, looking down at the trail so they don’t hit a rock or root and fall on their face.  Nah, not for me.

But that’s me.  If trail running is a person’s thing, well, that’s their thing, and I’d never presume to tell someone that how they choose to enjoy the outdoors is right or wrong.

Changes ‘Round Here

It’s been a strange, stressful few weeks.

A peaceful home isn’t something one thinks about much until it’s gone.  When it went away a few weeks ago, I found it difficult to concentrate on just about anything.

Writing stopped, and the momentum I had after ‘Goin South stopped.  I can’t say I was depressed, but my energy level certainly dropped.

Sometimes, Single Sucks

Tonight I managed to secure some (admittedly) free tickets to a very cool event. Off went emails to friends and acquaintances.

Some didn’t respond. Some did, but had other plans. And some were interested in going, but ultimately had to cancel.

What The…?

I work out at the gym.  I’ve been building muscle.  And while I still have that small 10 lb gut I’d like to lose, I think I’ve lost a pound or two of late.

Then I look in the mirror over the last couple of weeks, and it looks like I’m gaining weight under my chin.

What the hell?

Is it migrating?

Demanding The New

One of the projects that’s been tossed our way at work by management lately is to push out a software upgrade.  Soon.

As soon as we can, apparently.  So much so that we get asked about it on a weekly basis.

What I really wonder is if anyone actually knows why they’re asking for what they’re asking for.

Evolution Of A Photo

(First inspired by this post by Homer-Dog… two months ago…)

Back in the day (which makes me sound much older than I am, I know) I used to shoot pictures on my hikes with an SLR and slide film.  When I changed over from shooting slides to digital a few years ago, my shooting style changed pretty dramatically as well.

Shooting slides, which are expensive to buy and process, I spent a lot more time on shots.  It wasn’t uncommon for me to spend five or ten minutes (maybe even more) moving around to find the right angle, checking exposure, etc.

Shooting digital, I spend far less time setting up the shot, and instead end up just shooting a bunch of frames until I come to the right one.

Branching Out… For The Worse?

Lately I’ve found myself spending more and more time online.  I’m not entirely convinced that it’s a good thing.
