How Your Neighbors Can Irritate Without Even Being Home

It’s bad enough that on-and-off for the past few months I’ve had to listen to my neighbor’s going at it, sometimes night after night. Arguing, at times screaming at each other, more than once in the middle of the night.

The walls in my place, being lathe-and-plaster, are about as soundproof as a sheet of paper. Joy.

Line, Please?

Hiking on the trail last Sunday up to Santa Ynez Waterfall, I passed by a couple of young (around my age) women working their way down the canyon. Having taken a wrong turn a moment before, they joked that they were off exploring the “scenic” route.

I joked in return that I’d often been on the “scenic” route when hiking, and then commented that I’d found some of the most interesting discoveries while off on the “scenic” route.

HIKE: Santa Ynez Waterfall

(First a bit of background; hike info further down)

I can’t be sure, but the Santa Ynez Waterfall hike, may very well have been the first hike I ever did after moving to the LA area. Or maybe the second.

Uh, Do You Have To Do That Here?

So there I am today, in the gym, all sweaty from my treadmill run. (I know, ladies: makes you all hot & bothered, right? Ever notice celebrities don’t sweat, by the way? Seriously, I saw some picture of Matthew Machaungueney (however ya spell it) out running and his skin was dry as a bone. But I digress.)

I head over to the pec (cuz cool gym folk dudes always shorten “pectoral” to “pec”) machine, once again to sit there in the dire hope that, at one point some day, I will have Matthew Machaunueheyie’s (“gesundheit”) chest and the women will flock to me, unable to resist my chiseled muscular charm.

Back To Basics

Not too surprisingly, I woke up this morning to an already-warm house, and an already sore back. *sigh*

I crawled (carefully, I might add) from bed, fixed breakfast, and settled in to watch CBS Sunday Morning, which is sort of like the Sunday paper for those of us too lazy on a Sunday to even, uh, read.

When it ended, I shut off the TV, looked around, and figured “oh, what the hell”.

Yep, that’s right, the GeekHiker returned to the trail today.

Bah, Humbug

As nice as it is to think that IT is all about sitting behind a desk all day, controlling the network like a god with little more than effortless taps on the keyboard, it can be, at times, a great deal more physically active.

Workstations need to be moved, equipment switched out, new equipment arrives and needs to be set up and configured, etc. All involving various lifting, bending, stretching.

So when a new printer arrived on Thursday with a weight listing of 105.1 lbs., I certainly didn’t pick it up myself. And yes, I know from an early age and working in various jobs to lift with the legs, not with the back. So I lifted with my legs.

Yet, somehow, I managed to screw up my back anyway.

Friday Sillyness

A quick note and a quick recommendation that, uh, I’ve made before, actually.

So the hike that I’d been planning to do tomorrow, my first in a month, got canceled. Sadly, there is an early-season fire in the nearby area, burning west of Mt. Baldy Village. Hopefully they’ll get it contained soon, before the high temperatures and winds of a mini heat-wave kick in this weekend.

Distraction

Last night, on the way home from work, I stopped at the movie theater to see “Iron Man“.

I needed the distraction. In the worst possible way.
