It feels like I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, but nothing that seems to quite congeal into a post.
I actually tried to write something tonight, and ended up staring at a blank screen for ten minutes.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

(The fact that this is even possible in LA County is, well, wow…)
When my friend e-mailed me asking about hiking last weekend, I sent back another suggestion in reply: the storm the previous weekend had dropped a lot of snow in the mountains, how about a snowshoe instead? “Sure!” was the reply.
Yeah, sometimes it seems like there are a lot of reasons to dislike LA, but the fact that on Saturday I strapped on my snowshoes and went trudging off into a winter wonderland, then on Sunday got a club sandwich and fries in 75 degree weather is nothing to complain about. The fact that there’s such variety in such a small geographical area is, simply-put, amazing.
Obviously this hike can only be done during the winter when a decent covering of snowfall is in the mountains. I haven’t actually gone snowshoeing in a couple of years due to lack of snowfall, so this was a pleasant treat.

(The hike from New Year’s, juuuuust a bit late.)
I haven’t done a formal survey or anything, but I’d be willing to put good money on the bet that there isn’t a single LA hiking book that doesn’t include the following hike.
And why not? It includes a nice visitor center, a year round creek, a smattering of wilderness and a bit of Hollywood history.

[If you watch, minor spoiler about tonight’s The Amazing Race in this post.]
Tonight was the second-to-last episode of The Amazing Race, the show that always makes me hear my as-yet-unused newly-renewed passport on my desk scream “Use me! Use me!”
To which I usually respond: “Okay, passport, go win the lottery, would ya?”

I came into the office this morning feeling…well, not depressed or down or anything similar, nor angry or pissed or anything like that. No, that’s all dramatic and I felt pretty fine.
Except maybe just a little…peeved. Not intensely so, mind you, but peeved nonetheless.
Yeah, peeved is a good word.

(This is a stream of consciousness post, with no real story or conclusion. It’s too damn long, and if you read it and it bores you to tears or puts you to sleep, well, you can’t say I didn’t warn ya.)
This “post,” if I can be so bold to call it that given its rambling nature, isn’t a tale of something that happened in my day, or even a rant. It doesn’t have a beginning or middle or end. In fact, it’s just a stream of thoughts that don’t quite lead to a conclusion.
What this is all about is figuring out where I should be and, well, that’s quite a large thing to tackle in one’s mind anyways.

So the big storm that they’ve been promising all week has arrived, and I have to say that I’m not disappointed. Given Southern California forecasters propensity to, er, over-sell a little rain, it’s nice to see the storm live up to its reputation.
As I write this rain is falling in buckets outside and wind is blowing it up against the windows. Nice.
Having gone hiking on New Years (and I wasn’t even planning for the storm), I’m fully prepared to hunker down this weekend.

It always amazes me, at least in my neighborhood, how fast the Christmas lights come down. The whole street was lit up on New Year’s Day, but when I arrived home after the gym on Wednesday, only two houses still had lights. One of them was mine, the timers having turned them on promptly at five.
The street seemed positively dreary by comparison, the change being so sudden.
Not wanting to be the old man in the neighborhood who leaves his lights on until June, I went inside and started pulling down the lights from the windows. Away went my multi-colored kitchen.
