HIKE: Cheeseboro/Palo Comado Canyons

It’s about time I posted a hike, isn’t it?

Cheesboro/Palo Comado is a hike that I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but never seemed to end up doing.  After spending the day yesterday at work, I knew that I had to get outdoors today.  Luckily, the weather stayed warm and I was able to get out of bed early enough to beat the traffic on the 101 and (hopefully) beat the high winds that were supposed to start later in the day.

Exiting the freeway at Cheseboro Rd., I turned right towards the park and showed my superior navigation skills by… driving right past the entrance.  Heh.  Heading back to the intersection, I retraced my steps and found the entrance, with it’s missing sign.  I parked, strapped on the hiking boots, grabbed the pack and poles, and headed up the Modelo Trail which climbs a canyon up to a ridge.

On reaching the top of the ridge you have a great view into bothy Cheeseboro and Palo Comado canyons.  I met a friendly mountain biker and we examined the map I’d picked up at the entrance station.  We discussed my proposed loop and headed off in our separate directions.  The rest of the hike is on fire roads which means two things: lots of mountain bikers (not always good) and no bushwhacking, so no ticks (always good).  Fortunately, the bikers I meet in park are all very courteous.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt to be the type of hiker that steps off the trail to let them by; we all gotta share, ya know.

Heading over a windy, up-and-down ridge, the trail connects with the Palo Comado Connector which in turn leads to the Palo Comado Canyon Trail.  Passing along the backside of several ranches, the trail is a flat oak and savanna woodland.  It’s also the perfect place to observe hawks hunting amongst the trees.  I had to stop several times to view the red tails and one beautiful coopers hawk cruise over the trail and swing between the oaks.  A good place to come back with a picnic lunch and pair of binoculars.

Swinging north, the trail starts climbing out of the canyon, a steady climb, but not too steep.  The mountain bikes pretty much turn around at this point, so the trail was pretty much empty by this point.  Spring wildflowers have just started to bloom along the canyon walls, despite the meager rain southern California has received this year.  The trail is dry and exposed: there’s no shelter from the wind or the sun.  After a mile and half of climbing you reach the intersection with the Sheep Corral Trail.  Ascending a short distance on this trail rewards you with views back down Palo Comado Canyon and eastward to Shepherds’ Flat, the San Fernando Valley and, on a particularly clear day, snow topping peaks in the Angeles National Forest.

Descending eastward into Shepards’ Flat the trail by an old sheep coral (little more than a square pen of rusting barbed wire) and a pair of beautiful oak trees that dominate the flat.  It’s the perfect area to stop for lunch so, well, I did.  Turning south on the Cheeseboro Canyon Trail, you quickly leave the chaparral of the ridge area and head into riparian vegitation, with willows and sycamores shading the trail.  Mountain bikers once again become more prevalent as you enter a wide area in the canyon.  After a little more than a mile, you pass by (and smell) the sulphur odor of Sulpher Springs.

Leaving Sulphur Springs behind and heading into the lower part of the canyon, the trail is intermittently shaded by groves of oak trees.  It’s easy to see the fire damage from the Topanga fire here, with a mixture of live, healthy trees and dead or partially damaged ones.  Most of the chaparral has grown back, however, and as one nears the trailhead, you can see NPS working with patches of ground on the adjoining hills to restore native vegetation to the area.  Eventually, the trail crosses a flat section of open grassland, highlighted by the burnt husks of several unfortunate oak trees, and finally back to the parking lot.

Total distance: ~10 miles

Park: Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area; Cheeseboro/Palo Comado Canyons

Directions: From the 101 (Ventura) freeway, exit at Chesebro Rd., turn right and then right again about 200 yards after exiting onto Chesebro Rd.  After .7 miles, turn right into the park entrance (which hopefully will have a sign soon!) and drive to the parking lot at the end.  Maps of the park should be available at the entrance.

Movie Night

Rented “Stranger Than Fiction” tonight, and found it rather enjoyable, if slightly flawed.  I’ll try not to put any spoilers here for those who haven’t seen it, but stop reading now if you haven’t, just in case.

My biggest problem was toward the end, when one character realizes & accepts something waaaaay faster than they should have, logically.  Overall, though, the acting is really pretty good and subtle.  I do have to say: 39 year old average Joe Will Farrell + 28 year old cutie Maggie Gyllenhaal = “only in Hollywood” math.

But have to say this: I want someone to bake me chocolate chip cookies.  When it’s raining outside.  That would be cool.

Why do I do this for a living?

So it’s a beautiful Saturday here in LA.  Slight Santa Ana condition (where the winds blow out of the east and send all the smog and particulate matter out over the ocean), so it’s clear and just about that perfect 72 degree temperature.  Absolutely perfect for hiking, eating at an outdoor restraunt, or kicking it in the backyard with a good book.

So, of course, I’m at work.

Why?  Because Congress decided to move back Daylight Savings Time.  And, of course, none of the computers in the world are ready to calculate a different day to start DST, so they all have to be updated.  Servers, workstations, software, all of it.  It’s kind of a mini Y2K.

The best part for me was that one software vendor, who told everyone that they were unaffected by the change (since the software pulled from the system time), suddenly realized last Wednesday that, oops, you do need to patch up their software to make it work properly.  Brilliant, guys, you’ve only had a year and half since the president signed the bill to figure that one out.

So here I sit, in the server room, updating servers, while a beautiful day rolls by outside.

Well, at least the MP3 player shuffle just pulled up “Footloose”, so maybe it’s not all bad…

 UPDATE:

And, of course, the company that waited until the last minute, their patch didn’t work, so I have to in early Monday morning to call support.  Figures.

But at least I got home early enough to go to the beach and watch a fantastic sunset… too bad I left the camera at home.  D’oh!

What the deuce?

So tonight I go to the gym.  No trainer, just me and the equipment and my own willpower.  And of course, in the past, it’s the willpower that failed me.

I’ve been sore pretty much constantly for the last two weeks, with people at the gym and friends telling me “no, really, it gets better”.  I nod obligingly.

And tonight I’m there, on the various machines, pushing myself.  I mean really pushing myself.

This is new.  When I’ve been in a gym before, I never really pushed myself, you know?

In fact, I felt bad if I wasn’t pushing enough weight.  Even stranger, there was this little, tiny, very small part of me that was enjoying the effort.  (I would just like to take a moment and acknowledge how tiny that part of me was, and that I’m sure it will be long gone when I wake up tomorrow and cannot move my legs without screaming in utter agony, the sound of which I’m sure will annoy my neighbor, at least until he finds out why and starts laughing uncontrollably.)

Is this how becoming a gym rat starts?  What the deuce is going on here?  Freaky.

How do you know?

The Ex and I have been broken up for 7 weeks now.  The last year of our relationship was long distance.

But how do you know when you’re ready to start dating again?  I know there’s no “sign”, but is there a feeling?  Something you know on the inside that says that “yes, it’s okay to start going out and meeting women again”?

How do you know?

The Web: It’s All About Meeeeee!

I’ve been saying it for years, and now there’s a study to back me up: the web is making everybody think only about themselves and their own importance in the world.

Ironic, this study coming out a mere week after I started this little blog, with the comment:

“Current technology fuels the increase in narcissism,” Twenge said. “By its very name, MySpace encourages attention-seeking, as does YouTube.”

This gets fun at some point, right?

Back to the gym tonight, another session with the trainer.  I expect to be in massive amounts of pain tomorrow.

I’m starting to think that there’s a very fine line between a personal trainer and a dominatrix: both have a vested interest in putting their client in pain with the belief that the client will enjoy it.  Of course, I’m not really the type to go to a dominatrix, mind you; pain is most decidedly not my friend.

So, why the hell am I doing this?

A friend at work keeps telling me that it will get better.  The really annoying part is when I see people leaving after their workouts, they seem calm, relaxed, and not at all in pain.

It’s just so not fair…

San Francisco Days, Part 1

Okay, so how much of a geek can I be?  This was my souvenir from my weekend in San Francisco:

Yeah, they look innocent on the outside…

I’m usually pretty good at avoiding the various snacks that come around the office.  Boxes of See’s candies, cookies, chips, doughnuts, popcorn, pizza, whatever.  I already work in IT and I don’t want to completely fill the stereotype by having a massive gut spilling over my belt.  The little gut that I just started (and The Ex thought was “cute”) and now has me going to the gym to eliminate annoys me enough.

But today… today the Girl Scout Cookes arrived.

Back from SF & Battlestar Galactica

Back from SF.  Great trip, but too much to write about tonight.

But hey, a happy ending on Battlestar Galactica!  It’s nice that they have one of those, once in a while.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s always a wonderful show, spectacularly written and acted, but sometimes it can be depressing as hell…
