Thanksgiving With A Guest

So it turns out that I’m not spending the holiday weekend alone after all. A small brown mouse has decided to make his presence known around the house, no doubt looking for a small holiday handout.

He first showed up Monday night, rousing me from my sleep in the bedroom. I moved to the couch. He woke me up again an hour later, then raced into the kitchen (little bugger is fast, I tell ya) and disappearing. He was gone Tuesday night, so I figured he’d moved on, until he showed up last night again.

Why he’s here I have no idea. Owing to problems in the past with ants, I keep a pretty clean kitchen, and there isn’t a lick of food that doesn’t go into a plastic bag or the fridge.

The annoying part is that he’s ignoring the live-traps that I set out for him, all smeared with dabs of peanut butter. Peanut butter, which everyone from the trap packaging to my Dad to friends to co-workers swears mice are attracted to, just doesn’t seem to be to his liking.

Maybe he prefers the chunky variety.

There’s also the strange coincidence that he showed up the same night I did a post about Disneyland. Does his presence mean that Mickey is saying I’ll find someone to go with? Or is it Mickey saying to stay the hell away? Hmmmmmmm.

Anyway, hopefully he’ll be gone tonight. Or finally take a likeing to one of the traps. I’d hate to put out the glue traps (it’s hard to feel particularly agressive towards something that’s all of two inches long), but if I have to I guess I will.

As for the rest of the day, I spent a goodly chunk of it cleaning and re-arraigning the bedroom and storage closets. Seriously, could my life be any less thrilling?

The solo dinner was a simple affair. This evening I BBQ’d turkey breasts from Trader Joe’s. Mashed potatoes from Country Crock. Dressing from Stouffer’s. Frozen green beans. Martinelli’s cider. And gravy from a jar.

When you spell it all out like that, it doesn’t sound appetizing at all, but it actually was pretty good. Hopefully the Trader Joe’s pumpkin pie will turn out okay later on tonight as well.

For the evening I’ve commented on a few blogs and written this post. I was going to comment on other blogs tonight, but think I’ll go watch a movie instead.

And do I feel thankful this Thanksgiving? I do. I currently have a job, a decent house (current visitor notwithstanding) and Parents in good health. I have the ability and means to cook myself a good Thanksgiving dinner. I have all of you lovely readers (including one who called me to wish me a happy Thanksgiving), who still read despite my recent “detachment,” from things, which still amazes me. I live in a world untroubled by the fears and problems that many people live with on a daily basis.

There are imprefections and empty spots in my life, to be sure, but I’m not going think about that tonight.

No, I’m going to go have pumpkin pie instead.

Happy Thanksgiving.

  1. I prefer the chunky variety 🙂

  2. Freddy sent his friend to keep you company. He would have preferred to send himself, but he couldn’t bear the thought of leaving Maggie here to take over control of His House. Hopefully, Mo (that’s Mo the Mouse) won’t eat too much, or throw another loud party while you’re trying to sleep.

    Happy Thanksgiving!!

  3. I wish I could have had some pie… 😀

Sounds like the meal came out well. And glad the day was good for you 🙂

    Happy Thankgiving.

  4. There’s also the strange coincidence that he showed up the same night I did a post about Disneyland.

You don’t sound like you are freaked out about it, which is good, the mouse shouldn’t have the control!! I do hope you can get it out fast though…

  5. Happy Thanksgiving.

We had a rat in our garage in California. Big mother. Left it’s tail in a sticky trap and dragged it across the garage. Chewed holes in the Wife’s car’s windshield wiper fluid tank. Ate Homer’s dog food. I used a spring trap … it don’t chew no more.

  6. i totally hear you about being thankful. even when things are sucky, they can always be worse. (sorry if i sound like a greeting card.)

don’t have any advice about the mouse, though. sorry.

  7. At least you didn’t (drunkenly) cut your finger while washing dishes and accidentally call your cousin’s friend an effing bitch.

I may not be invited back so put me down for the jar o’ gravy next year!
