Random Riding Thoughts

(Because “what happens when GH takes a bike ride along the coast and randomly types an entry into his CrackBerry” was just too long a title.)

  • I really like riding the bike, and I’m reminded of it every time I ride. I wonder why I don’t do it more often?
  • Chatted with the friendly police officer at the “walk your bike” section of the pier. The fine for not walking your bike? $140.
  • And they put a point on your license.

The Commencement Speaker I Wish I’d Had

I’ve mentioned my love for “Dirty Jobs” before, and how much I appreciate the fact that Mike Rowe shows respect to any and all the people he meets on the show.

WordPress just started a new site called TED, on which are a lot of interesting speeches and talks.

‘Crusin South

So last weekend I made a quick run down to Orange County.  Yep, behind the proverbial “Orange Curtain”.

Somehow I got it in my head that I needed to drive the rest of Highway 1.  In my travels over the years I’ve driven, at various times, pretty much all of it.  It starts as a simple turn-off from the 101 in Northern California, goes over a number of switchbacks, then dramatically hits the coast and heads south to LA.

Traveling Solo

(This post will give the next post a little context.)

When I was younger (i.e. my twenties), I used to travel by myself all the time.

Not big trips, mind you, but little ones.  Sometimes an over-nighter, sometimes a couple of weeks, but generally in the west.  Sometimes I was camping, other times staying in hotels.

I’d make necessary trips into mini vacations.  Traveling between SF and LA, I’d stop overnight in San Luis Obispo, plunk down $36 at the Motel 6, and order a pizza.

But camping (in campgrounds) and making a couple-week trip through Grand Canyon, Zion and Cedar Breaks?  I didn’t have a problem with that either.

Dirty

I really should do it to her more often.

Yeah, I did it tonight, after work.  But I should definitely do it more often.

I mean, I really should.  After all, she deserves it.

HIKE: La Jolla Valley & Mugu Peak

This hike, along with the Sandstone Peak/Mishe Mokwa Trail, is one of the best hikes that show the highlights of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Starting from right next to the ocean, the hike ascends a sandstone canyon, crosses a wide open, grassy valley, hugs the edge of the peak where you can hear the waves crashing below, before finally ascending to the peak itself before descending back to your car.

Get To Know Your EMT

It’s not often that I recommend something lengthy to read, and even less often that it’s something that touches on serious matters.

This article though, written my an EMT here in Los Angeles, I found to be absolutely riveting…

Hiker To The Core

I headed out early on Sunday for the day’s hike.  I knew it was going to be a longish day (and probably even longer until I post about it, since I’m now two hikes behind).

Moreover, the day was positively gorgeous: sunny skies, warm-but-not-too-warm temperatures, light breeze but no gale-force winds and, best of all, exceedingly clear blue skies.

Well..

…at least I’m not the only one!  *grin*

Great television like BSG doesn’t come around all that often.  I wish it had lasted longer, of course, but I’m glad it was allowed to come to a conclusion.

The geek side of me though is really gonna miss it, though.
