I Love “Dirty Jobs”

I love “Dirty Jobs.”  And not only because it makes me just a little bit more thankful for my own job.

Not only because Mike Rowe treats everyone he works with with respect, no matter the job.

And not only because Mike Rowe is damn funny and self-deprecating.

But because, chances are, only on “Dirty Jobs” will you see a conversation like this:

Time To Stop Now

I’m hoping that this post will ultimately serve no purpose, but in our paparazzi-driven world, one never knows.

Overall I’ve been fairly pleased with the news coverage of Obama’s first week as president.  Sometime on the second day, however, I saw the following headline on one of the news sites:

Obama Daughters Return to School

There was a picture next to it of the girls getting out of a car.  Might have been a stock photo from the day after the election, but it’s hard to tell.

I didn’t click on the link.  I didn’t want to add a hit to that page’s count.

A Question…

There aren’t, insofar as I know, any hard and fast rules when it comes to blogging, right?

See, I’ve got a bit of a conundrum, because I don’t know how you all do it.  And I need a little advice.

Service, You Say…

It’s 10:00 and I just got home from a long day at work, so I’m going to keep my remarks on today’s inauguration short.

But there are two things I’ll share.

Slipping Away

(Last holiday post, and the hardest to write. Good thing I’m going out of town this weekend. Sorry, Homer-Dog, I know it’s not the “up” post you wanted, but life’s like that sometimes…)

When my Parents picked me up at the train station on my return from SF, my Uncle was in the backseat as well. They had just come from visiting Grandma and taking her to an appointment with a psychologist.

After having lunch in Old Sacramento, we headed down to the home where she’s currently living and being cared for.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. Turns out that in this situation you never know quite what to expect from one moment to the next.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Montalban

Driving home from work today I heard the news on NPR that Ricardo Montalban had passed away.

It was news that struck me down deep, where my latent inner Trekkie lives.

Randomly San Francisco

(Nobody minds that I’m still playing catch-up from the holidays, right? Hope not…)

I really should get up to San Francisco more often. I was only there a couple of days, but it rejuvenated me in surprising ways.

The difficulty in not getting up more often, of course, is the fact that we’re “all growed up” now. The older you get, the harder it becomes to schedule these sorts of things, owing to work responsibilities and what-not.

Funny thing is, when I was younger, poorer, with a crap (or no) job, I always figured it would be easier as I got older. I could afford to fly, get the time off work (and be paid for it!), etc. Now I’ve got the income and the paid vacation, but it’s harder to schedule time off work.

Makes me look forward to retirement.

Christmas Day-Tripping

(What, you haven’t commented on my couch post yet? I KNOW some of you are still going to respond, right? 😉 )

After a pleasant morning and lunch of good food and opening gifts Christmas Day, Dad found himself feeling a bit antsy. It was a beautiful day outside, a series of storms having passed over the Central Valley the previous night.

Those storms also made the drive up a heckuv’a lot of fun, believe me.

‘Travelin Man… Maybe…

(Still a couple of posts to come this week about the Holidays, mainly because I’ve got some photos to share!)

Driving south under those cold gray skies on the first gave me a little time to reflect on ’08.

One of the things I mulled over was that I didn’t travel as much as I wanted to last year.
