Yosemite In Winter Trip Day 4: Mirror Lake & Half Dome

Tuesday dawned bright and cold again. Despite leaving the air on all night, even the hotel room was chilly, at least until either JaG or myself got out of one of our respective beds, ran to the heater and turned it on, and ran back.

We rolled out of our beds Tuesday morning, groggily downed some oatmeal (thank God for the hotel mini-kitchen), and headed in our little caravan into the park.

“Today,” we thought, “today, we shall don skis.”

I’m Soooooo Not The Target Demographic

(This one’s a bit snarky. You have been warned.)

This is it, I’ve officially crossed into the next age bracket.

Tonight, according to the barrage of advertising, is the premiere of Quarterlife. No way in hell will I give it the dignity of a link.

Seriously, the concept of this one is this: the story of a bunch of twentysomethings who haven’t figured out their lives yet. Wah. Hell, I’m in my mid-thirties and I still don’t have a clue.

Yosemite In Winter Trip Day 3: Plans Change

The Plan.

This trip had one. Most of my trips have a general itinerary (“we’ve got to be there by such-and-so time because we have a campsite reserved”) but beyond that, I usually try to keep things a bit more free flowing. Oregon (“oh, hey, that looks interesting, let’s stop”) was the perfect example of this.

The Yosemite trip had a plan though: we were all signed up for a four day program through the Badger Pass Ski Area.

HIKE: Arroyo Sequit Park

(More vacation posts this week, but I just had to hike today…)

I slept last night to the sound of rain pouring down on the roof, which was continuing into the morning, so I knew today’s hike would be a wet one.

Pouring over my trail maps of the Santa Monica Mountains, I knew I was looking for a relatively short hike, and something that I hadn’t previously blogged. This limited me a bit until my eye wandered across the Arroyo Sequit Park trail.

I’d done the hike only once before, on a blisteringly hot day, but with rain showers moving through, I figured it might be perfect.

A Year? Really?

“Let’s see where this door goes…”

I wrote that at the end of my first post, a year ago today. It was a reference to the blog, of course, but also I think a reference to my life as a whole. I’d been stuck in neutral for some time, and the blog was a small part of kicking me out of it.

It was just a journal, I thought at the time, but as it turns out, I had no idea just what lay behind that fanciful door.

(Finally, eh?)

Day 0

I’m calling the first day “0” as I spent most of the day at work on that Friday, February 1, desperately trying to finish everything I needed to finish before leaving town for a week.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t helped by the (largely self-imposed) pressure of knowing that good blogger friend Just A Girl had arrived in town on an early-morning flight, and was waiting for me to get off of work. Especially as she had no cell phone, no place to go, and was hauling luggage around town while waiting.

Skiing Fool

(In which The GeekHiker makes a complete fool out of himself… again…)

Yesterday, for the first time ever, I went up to the mountains, up to the white fluffy stuff, to exchange my trustworthy hiking boots for a pair of ski boots and attempt downhill skiing.

Did I do this because I’m always one willing to try new things? To explore sports and activities that I haven’t tried before, to broaden and expand my horizons?

Hell no. I did it because a pretty girl wanted to go. Duh.

Different Paths

(Although I should pick up the idea from JaG’s blog today, this one just sorta came to the fore…)

Despite yesterday’s post (which was half tongue-in-cheek anyway), I think this was one of the better Valentine’s Day’s I’ve had in quite some time.

And, yes, I say that being single.

Requisite V-Day ‘Postin

It’s Valentine’s Day 2008. I’m still single.

Oh, Bloody Hell.

Yep, I think that about covers it.

Frustration

I just spent the last two hours trying to connect the new camera (you know, the one with all the pictures I need to write the post about last week’s vacation) to the computer to download the pictures.

Net result? Nothing.
