The Joys of Exes

Just A Girl had asked for an update on this post about a week ago, so here it is:

Old Film School friend – I did write him with congratulations, and felt better for doing so.

The Ex Girlfriend – Amazing how you can break up with someone, yet they never really go away, isn’t it?

Yes, I wrote her, but she never responded, which isn’t too surprising really.  Her birthday is next month, and I’m currently debating whether or not to send her an e-mail wishing her a happy birthday.  I brought this up to a friend of mine who said “well, you really have to question, and be sure of, your motivations for doing so.”

Uh oh…

Thursday morning, sometime on the way to work, the truck will roll over 36,000 miles.

What this means, of course, is that it will officially be off-warranty.

About a mile after that, everything will most likely fall apart on the vehicle, right?

Heh, that reminded me of the very end of this particular car chase.  Let’s hope the same doesn’t happen to me…

Hike/Backpack: Chilnualna Fall (Yosemite N.P.)

Short hike description, but lotsa photos for your viewing pleasure!  Hope you enjoy…

I’m listing this as both a hike and a backpack because it can be done either way.  We did it as a backpack two weeks ago, but I’ll write this description as a day hike.

From the trailhead parking lot, head east up the road towards the lower falls, veering right onto the hiker-only trail.  A short distance in, you’ll catch sight of the lower cascade, which must be a fantastic sight in spring, but was down to a trickle in mid August.

Dontch’a just hate…

… when your router decides to reboot itself every two minutes for no apparent reason?  I think I got all of two e-mails sent out in a 1/2 hour before I gave up on being on the net for a while.

So I went for a group bike ride on the beach Saturday, and finally made it to Griffith Observatory Sunday, so the offline life is good at least.

More posts as soon as I get the $%&@#! thing fixed…

Thoughts In The Woods (And a Cool Sandwich)

I was going to blog something more significant tonight, but I just can’t seem to put the thoughts together.  I have no idea why.

It’s interesting, but it’s easier to blog up in the mountains, at least on the couple of occasions that I’ve done it.  Even then, it sometimes takes a while.

I noticed it last weekend, when I arrived at my picnic spot at about 1:00.  The hike had already chilled me a little bit; getting a little sweat on the brow whilst smelling pine trees will do that.

But it wasn’t until after I’d had lunch, after I’d blogged the hike, after I’d partially written about the hike, after I’d done some reading, after I’d sat and looked down the canyon, after I’d just lazed about in my chair and just stared up at this view: Read More…

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Hike

In the spirit of “the journey is the most interesting part”, getting to Mt. Hillyer was a challenge unto it’s own…

It was the perfect plan.

Like most so-called perfect plans that I make, however, it was doomed to be (almost) thwarted by Murphy’s Law.

The plan went something like this: pack a picnic lunch, drive into the mountains, do the Mt. Hillyer hike, drive to a lunch spot, eat and write up the hike on the laptop sitting under pine trees.

Oh, yes, my friends, it was a brilliant plan.

HIKE: Mt. Hillyer

With an elevation just about 6,000 feet, Mt. Hillyer is a trail that I often hit early in the hiking season, while areas in the high country are still covered in snow or just too cold and windy and irritating to make a fun hike.  With its mostly southern exposure, the trail is usually warm, but can be hiked pretty much all year.

Mt. Hillyer’ rambling, flattish summit is more like a pine strewn meadow than a “peak” per se, so peak-baggers will be disappointed.  But as a fall or spring hike Mt. Hillyer is a wonderful diversion.  It’s generally a quiet, lightly visited place, making it all the more enjoyable.

Decisions, decisions, decisions

Following up on this post…

Something Girl – I’m not going to write her, of course.  Yeah, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion (I’m not as dumb as I look… sometimes), but it was nice to have a little backup from y’all anyway.  And *kb* is right: whatever the reason she dropped out of sight, it probably doesn’t have a damn thing to do with me anyway.  ‘Movin on.

Into every good, a little bad must fall…

Following up on the end of this post, there’s always a little bad to keep life balanced…

I am starting to be convinced that life is nothing more than a monkey who, no matter what I do, just likes to occasionally throw his shit at me.  Just to see how I’ll react.  Just to keep me in line.

And the truth of it is, I’m getting tired of it.  Things like last weekend’s backpacking trip are about what I’ve been attempting to do since the beginning of the year: move my life forward, and hopefully becoming a happier, more balanced person in the process.

What a weekend…

The Good:

A short post, as I am tired and unable to think quite straight.

This weekend I got to do something I’ve never done before: I went backpacking in Yosemite National Park.
