The Lunch Date

I’ve been racking my brain for the last 24 hours about what to write about the lunch date yesterday. What to say, how much to say, how little.

I mean, how descriptive can I be of a date that essentially involved nothing but talking? For the better part of five hours?

It makes for a good first date, sure, but not particularly thrilling blog material.

OhCrapOhCrapOhCrap

(Hope this post doesn’t seem too, uh, weird on the heels of yesterday’s Doctor Sillyness…)

Okay, so this isn’t the post that I thought I was going to write.

I thought I was going to be writing a post about over-thinking something. About reading too much into things. About the fact that my brain sometimes runs down wild tangents that, ultimately, are my achillies heel.

The strange thing is that my brain doesn’t seem to be doing that much at the moment, which is strange and confusing to me. I mean, you think you know yourself, and then…

Okay, maybe this needs a little context, no?

That Damned Knee… Again

(Just a side note: this weekend, hopefully, I’ll be writing about something more interesting than this medical drivel…)

First off, can I just say how sick of my knees I am? Of talking about them, feeling them in pain, going to the hospital, writing about them, all of it? I mean, seriously, they really shouldn’t be that front-and-center in my life. I’m this close to changing the sub-head at the top of the page to include “and who has bad knees”.

And yet, here I am, writing about the right knee I felt pain in out on Santa Cruz Island. Again.

How Old Am I Again?

Exiting the Rite-Aid today, I came upon a skinny teenage kid outside the store, joking around with his friends.

He had long hair and was wearing jeans. He was riding a skateboard. He was wearing Converse sneakers. And, to top it all off, a worn-out black Black Sabbath t-shirt with the sleeves cut off.

For a moment, I was a bit lost. Was it really 2008 and I’d just turned 35, or was it 1988 and I just turned 15?

Talk about your head trips…

Santa Cruz Island Extras

(First, a quick thank you to everyone for your kind words on my birthday post. I have, as I always try to, responded to you individually there.)

Just a couple of miscellaneous things that didn’t quite fit into the posts on my trip to Santa Cruz Island:

35: WTF?

(This is the closest I’ll ever get to Twitter. ‘Cuz, really, my life isn’t that interesting on a daily basis.

I’m backposting this running string of thoughts back to the day I actually typed it. So, climb into your way-back machine and place yourself, mind & thought all the way back to… well, all the way back to Thursday, August 7th…)

My first thought on waking up this morning was “35? WTF? When did that happen?” No joke.

So, at 4:32 this afternoon, I’ll turn 35 years of age. Most likely I’ll be somewhere in traffic after work today, which somehow seems appropriately mundane.

HIKE: Santa Cruz Island, Smugglers Cove

A longer day hike than the Potato Harbor loop, the cross-island trek to Smugglers Cove provides for scenic views of the rolling hills that make up the eastern section of the island. The rocky beach at Smuggler’s cove isn’t the best for sunbathing, but the scenic views to the west of nearby Anacapa Island make for a good sight during your lunchtime stopover.

HIKE: Santa Cruz Island, Isthmus Trek

I’m a bit hesitant to write this trail description up, even though it was the longest hike of the trip. Why? Basically because I didn’t see anything.

Sitting as it does in the Pacific Ocean, it’s not uncommon for fog and wind to regularly descend on the Channel Islands. During the late summer the fog will often burn off, leaving clear days and blue skies. Unfortunately, I wasn’t so lucky on this trip.

So the photos are a bit skimpy (not many scenic vistas here, sorry), and I will have to return sometime again to redo this hike and add better pictures. Darn. 😉

HIKE: Santa Cruz Island, Potato Harbor Loop

This 5 mile moderate dayhike is perfect for the day visitor to Santa Cruz Island. It can be completed easily before the boat returns to the dock, with time for relaxing with a picnic lunch at the beach before returning to the mainland.

Of course, there is a drawback to the hike: with it’s brief overview of the island’s variations, it will likely whet your appetite for more.
