Weird State ‘o Mind

I’ve been debating what to write, or even if to write, this particular entry.

I’ve mostly been writing about hikes and little stuff lately, and not so much of the more personal journal entries. This hasn’t entirely been by intent.

Sometimes, you just end up going with the flow. And the flow around here of late has been decidedly business-like.

Well, Surely…

I’m sure you’ve all seen it by now, but I’ll throw in a tip of the hat and a bit of a dream.

Because, surely, they’ll need IT guys on Mars. Right?

Plus, I’ll bet there’s some damn good hiking up there.

It’s All Right…

No hiking this weekend. Just a weekend of cleaning and reading and watching movies and nursing the bit of poison oak I picked up on last weekend’s backpack. And listening to music.

Music is one of those (many) subjects about which I don’t know very much. It’s not that I don’t like music, I just don’t know it in-depth by any means.

My CD collection isn’t that huge as a result. I don’t have thousands of songs on my mp3 player. Heck, I don’t even keep regular track of bands. I know what I like, I have a small collection of CDs and songs, I often add something new when I like it, and it’s all good.

HIKE: Charmlee Wilderness Park

(For some reason I ended up uploading a lot of pictures from the hike, so I’m not posting them all below. You can see them on the Flickr site here.)

Charmlee Wilderness Park, run by the City of Malibu Parks & Rec Department, is one of those little gems in the Santa Monicas that makes for a quiet, easy day.

It’s generally not too crowded, has a nice little nature center, a great picnic area under old oak trees, and hiking trails that can be hiked (well, more wandered really) by people of all ages and abilities. I’ve detailed a short 2.1 mile hike below, but the total trail mileage in the park is about 8 miles.

The hike and pictures below are from a couple of weeks ago. The park right now is green and starting to get its crop of spring wildflowers, which makes right now a great time to visit, but don’t let that stop you from traveling there any time of year.

How I Know The Universe Is Just Playing With Me

One of the multitude of projects I’ve been juggling lately at work has been trying to figure-out/clean-up/optimize our phone system.

This is a bit more difficult than it sounds because, even though they’re often lumped together, computer networks and phone networks are two radically different worlds.

Two Articles

Perusing the web today at lunch, these two articles, combined, gave me a pretty good chuckle.

Why? Because:

Sore, But Good

Just got back tonight from the first official backpack of the season.

Every part of my body is sore. But it’s all good.

Hopefully I’ll post more about the trip in a few days, but it’s late and I’m about to crawl into my nice mattress-and-box-springs bed (slightly more comfy than a Therm-A-Rest), so I will leave you with this:

A Skill To Improve On?

(Had a long post planned, but the neighbors were screaming at each other till 2 am and I’m running on four hours sleep. So here’s… this.)

Every “For Dummies” book I’ve ever seen has generally fit into two categories: explaining a difficult topic or improving the skill of the book’s subject. Every. Single. One.*

Want to learn about wine? Get “Wine for Dummies.” Want to learn how to use Microsoft Word? Get “Word for Dummies.”

Randomly wandering around the bookstore today I saw… wait for it… “Depression for Dummies.”

So. Is it a guide on what depression is (“I think I’m depressed, but I’m not sure, better get a Dummies book”)? Or a guide on how to be depressed more successfully (“I’m depressed, but I really think I could be doing it better”)?

Hmmmmmmmm……

*Okay, there might be exceptions, but this is my experience.

Coming Back

A few weeks ago when I drove out to do the Arroyo Sequit hike, I stopped by the Secret Spot. The park is still closed, of course, and with the rains last month doing more damage with mudslides, it will be for some time.

The current estimation is that it won’t open til June. Which seems like a really looooong way away. *sigh*

Still, even from outside the park, there are signs of things coming back:

It’s Parody, But…

…in all honesty, this actually seems like a pretty good idea.

Just ‘sayin.
