Hike: Nicholas Flat

Sometimes the hike you end up on isn’t the hike you’d planned.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years of hiking in the Los Angeles area: flexibility is key. That’s not always a bad thing, mind you.

So the hike I’d planned today in the newly-reopened Angeles with spectacular views got put aside when I woke up to cloud filled skies and misty rain. I love to hike in the rain, but saying “this hike has great views” then posting pictures of fog, well, that makes for some pretty dull blogging.

Rain hikes beg for smaller locations and a slower pace, a hike where the details come out. Nicholas Flat is a small area in the Santa Monica Mountains that I often go to when it rains: it’s amazingly quiet and peaceful.

Audience Priorities

Saturday night I went to see Into The Wild.

I have to say that I liked the movie quite a bit, especially as it paints a portrait of McCandless without actually trying to sway you one way or the other. Agree or disagree with his leaving home and family and traveling for two years to find himself, it’s for the viewer to decide.

(warning: mild spoilers ahead)

Blue About The Gray

Gray

See that above? That’s the approximate color of an 18% gray card.

Boring, eh?

It’s Not Just a Car Horn, It’s a Magic Car Horn

Saturday’s hike (writeup to come, well, whenever I get off my lazy butt and do it) went very smoothly. My leader skills seem to be okay, the group was very nice, and I met some very interesting people to chat with.

Heading from the spot we had lunch to the freeway, I was feeling pretty good. Getting a little Vitamin D goes a long way for me.

All was good until I headed for the Freeway to go home.

Holidays and Habits

Halloween has now come and gone, and with the fun out of the way the stress and labor of the holiday season can begin. Yes, the sales, travel, family strife (if there is any in yours) and general strain on the psyche that is the holiday season can truly begin in earnest now.

Unless, of course, you happen to be my local chain hardware store, which somehow managed to have all of the Christmas stuff on display when I stopped there on October 7th. Yes, that’s right, a full three weeks before Halloween I found myself staring at an aisle of fully assembled and lit Christmas trees.

‘Cuz It’s, Uh, Amazing?

I’ll admit it: I watch TV.

Not just PBS either. Nope, I’ll even admit to willingly watching check-your-brains-at-the-door mainstream television.

HIKE: San Vicente Mountain

Growing up in Sacramento, I was constantly reminded of it’s history, specifically that of the Gold Rush and railroads.

Los Angeles is a town that has a tendency to constantly tear down it’s history in favor of building something new. Preservationists in this town have a devil of a time saving old, often quite beautiful structures from the wrecking ball.

While the structures on San Vicente Mountain are far from what one would define as beautiful (well, I suppose that all depends on your personal taste), the hike is a trip back in time to the Cold War and how Los Angeles prepared itself for imminent attacks at the time.

Hike: Eagle Rock Loop

(Did this hike two weeks ago, the day before the Malibu Fires. While the fires were burning, I held off posting since, well, to be frank, I didn’t want to jinx things since the fires were burning east towards Topanga State Park.

Luckily the fire didn’t burn that far east, so here’s the hike.)

The Eagle Rock loop was one of the first hikes I ever did when I first moved to the LA area. It’s a good introduction to the mixed chaparral and oak woodlands that cover the Santa Monica Mountains, and is only about a twenty minute drive outside of Santa Monica.

Pirates ‘n Apples

Ever had one of those weekends where, at the end, you felt like you should feel a whole lot better about the whole thing than you actually do?

Hm. Perhaps that thought deserves a bit of background info.
