(I’ll get back to the trip stuff soon, promise.)
I left a birthday message on The Ex’s answering machine today.
A little late due to my being out of town (which I was sure to mention), and short and sweet, just like the message she left me in August.

It seems like I’m having a bit of difficulty getting back up to the speed of normal life. Suddenly it feels like there’s so much to do.
Today I headed back to the gym for the first time since I left town. Oy.
Amazing how two little weeks can make you feel like a newbie.

Home at last. So much for the idea of blogging on the road, eh? Heh.
After most of the little “extended weekends” I’ve been taking over the last couple of years, I return home feeling depressed. In part it was because the trip was so short, in part it was because I’m the type of person who takes a couple of days to get relaxed. It takes me a bit to “come down” from the day-to-day.
Not so in this case. I actually feel quite relaxed tonight. It’s a nice change.
Which isn’t to say that I’m looking forward to work tomorrow morning. I mean, c’mon, that would just be silly.

Today, as one might expect, wasn’t very exciting. Like the last day of any trip, it’s all about going home, which is always a mixture of feelings.
On the one hand, you’re eager to go back to your own space, sleep in your own bed.
On the other: the trip is over.

Once you’re used to the idea waking up to the banging of steam pipes isn’t so bad.
Waking up because someone has decided to, at 2:00 AM, play classical music on the lobby piano is an entirely different thing.

This morning started out with what I could have sworn was someone right outside our window. Standing next to some very large pipes. Whaling away on them for all he or she was worth with a big-ass pipe wrench.
Not exactly a sound that yields a restful slumber.
Something I rarely do on a camping trip is have a morning campfire. Usually I’m more interested in getting a warm breakfast and heading out to do the hike, museum, or whatever else I’d planned to do that day.
The chilly morning at Cape Blanco begged to differ, and JaG and I had a nice roaring fire going by 7:30 to help warm ourselves.
There’s just something about waking up next to a creek. The quiet noise of water rushing over rocks, tumbling down the canyon with a gentle sound…
It makes you feel calm, peaceful, and really comfortable in your sleeping bag.
It also, I’m sad to say, really, really makes you want to go to the bathroom, no matter how cold it is outside that sleeping bag.
Hey, I never said camping was perfect, did I?

This morning started out again with breakfast at the hotel. Biscuits and gravy. Not nearly as good as my southern grandmother used to make, but not bad.
We then made a quick run to the grocery store, mainly for turkey dogs (we are camping, after all), then back to the hotel to pack the cars and head off for the coast.
