Hiking Head-To-Toe

(A slightly technical post, for those so inclined…)

I received an e-mail from someone recently asking me what I wear and use, gear wise, when I go out hiking. The person was a relative newbie to hiking and, having been to the nearest REI store and completely overwhelmed, was searching the web for a little advice.

HIKE: Mt. Williamson

Mt Williamson is, by no means, the highest peak in the Angeles National Forest; in fact, an unnamed peak a quarter mile east is higher.

So, what makes Mt. Williamson a great hike? Two reasons: 1) a nice trail that’s a good mixture of sun and shade for most of its length and 2) Mt. Williamson lords over the desert areas north of LA. From its top you stare straight down the mountainside with no interruptions between you, the San Andreas Fault, and the broad flat expanse of the Antelope Valley.

It’s 1:30 AM

(Read the last post first. This is from Saturday night; but apparently at 1:30 in the morning the “save” button and “publish” buttons look remarkably similar. Heh.)

I just got home from the party, having stayed far, far later than I’d intended to. I was (and still am) planning to go hiking ~~tomorrow~~ today, assuming I wake up before noon.

The party was fun. Very casual, met a lot of cool people, none of whose names I can remember right now. 😉

Laziest Weekend Ever

(Another one the non-meat-eaters might want to avoid…)

Most years, I don’t tend to do too much on the two big weekends of the year, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Usually, everyone else is doing something, and sitting in traffic with all of them going in and out of town just isn’t that appealing.

The fact that we Americans put so much effort into celebrating these two weekends is a rather sad commentary on the dearth of time off we have in this country. Would these weekends be such a big deal if we had a few more vacation days? I think not.

One of the special joys of living in LA is the fact that the illusion (the weather is perfect all the time) doesn’t quite mesh with the reality (at times it gets really, really hot).

So bad…

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m usually very good at avoiding the various food temptations that come around the office.

This morning however (with the idea no doubt planted in my head by Charlotte’s post, thank-you-very-much Charlotte), one of the other department’s supervisors walked in with a box of donuts.
