HIKE: Paramount Ranch

When I did this hike a couple of weeks ago, I hadn’t really expected a hike at all. I’d brought along a book and a few snacks and expected to spend most of the day reading, but Paramount Ranch proved to be something of a surprise.

Paramount Ranch has been used as a filming site ever since Paramount Pictures first bought the property in 1927 (and even before that, as I understand from the ranger’s talk). It’s changed hands a number of times over the years, in the process subbing for early California, colonial Massachusetts, Africa and even ancient China. It’s most recent well-known incarnation was as the town in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (a fact the NPS doesn’t hesitate to remind you of, again and again). It even spent part of it’s life as a racetrack, the remnants of which can still be seen on the property today.

Pondering

Ever find that you’ve read something and it sticks in the back of your mind? Not in such a way that you actually sit down and ponder it, mull it over, or consider its intricacies, but just sorta floats in the back of your thoughts, popping up now an then throughout the day?

I’ve pointed out Rob Brezsny’s Free Will Astrology before. I’m not a follower of astrology per se myself: I don’t know anything other than my sign, really. I don’t follow any column regularly because a) they’re usually so general as to not have any meaning and b) I don’t really care enough to invest the time & energy daily.

That said, when I do catch Brezsny’s column, I often find that I end up pondering something I haven’t pondered before. Such was the case with last week’s horoscope:

Answer: “Sproing, Snap”

Question: What is the sound of a mousetrap being triggered at 11:15 on a Friday night?

I don’t know yet whether or not he’s the only one, but that’s one caught and taken care of at the very least.

Screaming Christmas Spirit

Yesterday I attended this.

Nothing screams Christmas spirit like trying to get as many of other people’s presents as you can for yourself, right?

Ugh. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Friday Sillyness

(Okay, this one is just a bit risqué…)

So, if I ever end up with a gift certificate to eHarmony (you gotta admit, it’s a bit pricy), at least now I know how NOT to answer question 14…

Instead Of A Woman, Life Gives Me This

Why?

Why is it that the biggest, hairiest guy at the gym… is always the one who feels most comfortable walking around buck naked in the locker room?

Thanksgiving With A Guest

So it turns out that I’m not spending the holiday weekend alone after all. A small brown mouse has decided to make his presence known around the house, no doubt looking for a small holiday handout.

He first showed up Monday night, rousing me from my sleep in the bedroom. I moved to the couch. He woke me up again an hour later, then raced into the kitchen (little bugger is fast, I tell ya) and disappearing. He was gone Tuesday night, so I figured he’d moved on, until he showed up last night again.

Thanksgiving Eve

Over the weekend I talked to the Parentage and the “formal” decision was made: unlike last year they won’t be coming down, electing instead to stay up north near my Grandmother.
